Discipline: The Key to Life and
Learning
Besides parents, other influential people could be grandparents, older
siblings, family friends, neighbors, Sunday School teachers, or pastors.
Hopefully, these people share your values and help form the values of your
children.
Friends also influence the way your children will act. Unfortunately,
this is an area that is hard for parents to control. Young boys and girls
like to choose their own friends, and sometimes the friends they like the most
are the ones that you approve of the least. Still, we can try to guide our
children in the right direction.
School teachers almost always try to help their students find
self-discipline. The success of the teacher's approach depends on the
rapport the teacher has with the student. Some students never "warm up" to
the teacher, no matter how hard the teacher tries. One school of thought
regarding discipline is that if the teacher can make the student like him, then
the student will behave and learn. This works sometimes, but it can be
difficult sometimes, too!
So, parents, we teachers need your help! Please be sure to mention the
importance of education when you are talking with your children. Show
respect for teachers. If you have a difference of opinion from your
child's teacher, try not to get your child involved. Go to meetings with
teachers and send them notes. Be positive and supportive. It will
help your child be successful in life, and teachers will be grateful!
