Teaching Advice for Ben
Franklin's Self-Improvement Plan
For intermediate grades and
up:
Print out the list of
character qualities and give copies to the students. If you prefer, write
them on the board or overhead projector. Read and discuss them.
Discuss the Teaching Advice explanations of the qualities. Look up
definitions of the words in the dictionary. Have students choose one or
more qualities to work on in their own lives and write a description of the ways
they will achieve them.
Assign a research project.
Have students read about the life of Benjamin Franklin and write a report on one
of the following topics:
1. What events in
Ben's life do you think encouraged him to be frugal ?
2. Choose one of the
many jobs that Ben Franklin had in his lifetime. How did his work on these
character qualities in his life help him to be successful in this job?
You could use this activity
as a cooperative learning lesson. Divide the students into groups and have
them research, discuss, and write their ideas as a group. After a
designated period of time, have the spokesperson of each group report on what
they have learned and decided. Responsibilities in each group could be:
discussion leader, researcher, writer, reporter.
Have each group chose a
character quality from the list and write and perform a skit about it.
For primary students:
Post the character
qualities, read, and discuss them. Ask the children to describe what these
qualities mean in their own lives. Have them choose some of the qualities
and draw pictures showing people acting out these qualities. Let the
students role-play children in situations where they would wisely use these
character qualities.
