Writing Sequences

When students begin creative writing, one technique they learn is how to organize their thoughts sequentially.  They will choose their topic and begin with a topic sentence.  Then they will write their narrative in the order that the events occurred, using words such as first, second, third, next, then, and finally.  In their last paragraph or sentence, they will conclude their narrative with a summary of what they have written.

Here are some useful suggestions for sequential writing topics.

What you do when you get up in the morning or how you get ready for school;

How to make a sandwich or a pizza or your favorite food;

How to make a bed

How to brush your teeth

How to wash dishes

How to get ready for a test

How to groom a pet

How to draw a picture

Tell about your day in school

Describe what you do when you get home from school.

Tell how you do your homework

Or how to practice an instrument

         You probably have many ideas of your own, or you may wish to let your children think of their own topics.  Some will even lend themselves to demonstrations.

Now we are ready to begin writing!
