Teaching Advice Tip

Learn the location of the fifty States in the United States.

Reproduce a blank U. S. map and number the states. Copy a numbered map for each student.  Teach the states "by numbers."  Drill the students by saying the number and have them answer with the name of the state.  They should put their finger on the state as they name it.  Start with a few states and add states as they memorize the names and locations.  The goal is for every student to be able to name and locate all fifty states.

Make a copy of a blank U. S. map for each student, with numbers first.  Use maps without numbers for a further exercise with colors.  Have students take out the designated crayons that you name.  Assign a color to a state.  For example, you might say, "Color Georgia yellow....Color Alabama blue...etc."  Make a colored key for yourself that can be used to call out the colors and also to check the accuracy of the students' work.

For advanced students, have them label the blank maps with the abbreviations of the names of the states.

Ask the students to write the names of as many of the states as they can.   Give them a time limit or make it a race to see who can write the most.

Also, for advanced students, challenge them to a "state" spelling bee, using the names of the states.  You might want to begin with the shorter ones first!

For oral or written review, ask riddle-type questions, such as, "Which state is south of Minnesota?"  For your convenience, sample questions are listed as "United States Geography Quiz"  in the "Worksheets" section of this site.
